The Maine State Capitol Building

The Maine State Capitol Building
Augusta, Maine
Date of Visit: February 23, 2013

When I visited the State Museum I also visited the State Capital Building. It is a beautiful example of stonework and architecture. It was built using granite harvested in Maine and though it has been refurbished a multitude of times it remains a symbol of the strength of the state. It unfortunately is closed on the weekends which seriously hampered my ability to really check out the building.

The Maine.gov website gives and excellent description of the history of the building. The site link is http://www.maine.gov/legis/lawlib/sthousehistory.htm which I have found very interesting. The Capitol Building has gone through many renovations since it was originally opened in January of 1832. A leaky roof and the age of the building have made the renovations necessary almost as much as the growth of the government. The capital houses not only the legislature, but it contains the Governor’s offices and the state law library along with the hall of flags. It did house the Maine State Museum, but the museum has its own building now.

This is worth a re-visit for me; the next time will be at a time when the building is open for visitors. I recall visiting there on the same field trip in the 6th grade. The history of the building and its evolution to its present state is an important part of the state’s history.
